Paper Heart Hanging Banner

Crafting with old book pages is one of my favorite ways to create. The book pages add a touch of elegance to the craft. It’s also a great way to recycle a book that is no longer being used. I especially like that it is perfect for using a book that is falling apart. In fact, I love the idea of using a well-read book for something like this. It just makes the craft even more special.

I know that garlands and banners tend to be used to decorate around holidays. For me, though, they are great all year long. Sure, you could use this for Valentine’s Day or an anniversary, but I love the idea of just having it there every day reminding me to love others.

The best part of this craft? It’s so easy to have the kids help you create!

Can I Use Ribbon Instead of Twine?

Absolutely. I love using twine in my crafts. It has a natural feel and the neutral color of the brown goes with almost any décor. Since I am a big fan of farmhouse style, it works wonderfully. In fact, I have a 40-yard spool of jute in my craft closet. I use it so often, it’s worth investing in the large amount since it won’t go to waste.

If you prefer something different, the ribbon will a beautiful burst of color and daintiness to the hearts. While you can use any color of ribbon, I think finding a thin ribbon that matches the color of the room is the best choice. Of course, you can also match the ribbon to the season, and you can even switch it out every season so the same banner can be used over and over again.

Can I Paint or Dye the Hearts Different Colors?

The hearts as they are, have an antique color to it from the age of books. If your pages are whiter or you want a different look it is easy to achieve. You can paint the pages and get a beautiful colored heart banner or you can create a stain for the pages.

Stains can be made from acrylic paint or use a water colored paint which is naturally thinner. To create the stain with acrylic paint, you will get the color you want and then add water until it is thinned and watery. This will give the paper a hint of color but still allow the words to shine through the color and show that it is a book page. This also creates if the pages of your book at still new looking and you prefer the older look.

You can even assemble the hearts and then brush the edges with a bit of paint for just a pop of color. I’ve even added a dab of glue and glitter to them for even more sparkle!

How to Make a Paper Heart Hanging Banner

Tear 1-2 pages out of the book per heart you want to make.

\"Tearing

Using a ruler, mark equal vertical lines 1″ wide on the page.

\"Measuring

Cut these strips out and set them aside.

\"Cutting

Now, use the ruler to measure 2 strips 6″ long, 2 strips 4″ long, and 2 strips 3″ long. Depending upon the width of the book page, you may need 2 pages per heart.

\"Strips

Now, stack your strips of book page starting with one 3″, one 4″, two 6″, one 4″, and finally one 3″. You want the two shortest on the outside and the two longest in the center. Line up the ends and staple together.

\"Stapling

Now, pull the two shortest strips down into a heart shape and staple the ends together.

\"Stapling

Pull the next size and staple together with the smaller pieces already connected.

\"Stapling

Repeat this again with the last two longest pieces connected all 6 strips of paper into a heart shape with 3 layers.

\"Stapling

Next, cut small strips of twine and tie one inside each heart to hang them.

\"Tying

You can use them like this, or string them onto a long piece of twine to create a banner to hang on a mantle or doorway.
